Iowa Motion Picture Association to provide “Grip 101” film and video crew training

The Iowa Motion Picture Association is offering five “Grip 101” training sessions in March and April for people interested in working in the film and video production industry. These weekend training sessions, held at community colleges around the state, will be presented by experienced IMPA members, and are designed to provide a comprehensive orientation to working as an apprentice freelance grip (lighting technician).

The Iowa Legislature passed a bill in 2007 creating financial incentives for film and video production in the state. Three projects qualified for tax credits last year and more are expected to shoot in 2008. Currently, there are a limited number of workers available for feature production across Iowa. A shortage of grip workers is especially anticipated.

Participants will receive:

  • Iowa production industry overview, including the Iowa Film Office, IMPA, Iowa Scriptwriters Alliance, college programs, film festivals and student and professional producers
  • Set orientation including job descriptions, chain of command and set etiquette
  • Specific training in production grip equipment terminology, transport, set-up and take-down; safety precautions
  • Hands-on experience in doing a variety of scene “set-ups” during the 2-day training, culminating in shooting a short production Sunday afternoon

Grip 101 sessions will run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at these locations:

March 8–9 – Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny — Call 515-964-6800 or 1-800-342-0033 and refer to CRN 26513.
March 15–16 – Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa — Call 1-800-346-4413 or 1-641-683-5249 and refer to 08/YR*VOC*3103*501
March 29–30 – Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids — Call 319-398-1022 or 1-800-332-8833 and refer to CBEM-005-SLI01
April 5–6 – Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville — Call 1-800-252-5664 and refer to Course #16225
April 12–13 – Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs — Call (712) 325-3255 or (800) 432-5852, Ext. 3255 and refer to TRADE 99 * 04

The fee of $99 is payable upon registration directly with each community college. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be added to a roster of production workers and referred to future production projects in the state.

About the IMPA
The Iowa Motion Picture Association is the professional organization of the state’s film and video production community, existing to promote the talents and skills of the membership, foster good will between members, and provide support to students interested in careers in film and video production.

The IMPA has received a Targeted Industries grant from the Iowa Department of Economic Development for marketing and communication to raise awareness about the potential for bringing more production business to Iowa, and providing workforce development training.

The Incentives
New legislation included financial incentives for production in Iowa, including a 25% investment tax credit, 25% production expense credit, and exemption from state income tax of income to Iowa resident workers from qualifying projects. Projects must spend a minimum of $100,000 in Iowa, and be intended for distribution beyond Iowa.

For more information please contact Kent Newman, IMPA President, at fullspectrum@mchsi.com or 515-250-9459.

Theatre Central presents “Camp Angel” March 5-8

PELLA — Central College’s Theatre Central presents the world premiere of Jeffrey Bruner’s new play “Camp Angel,” directed by Ann Wilkinson, Wednesday, March 5, through Saturday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kruidenier Center. Tickets for “Camp Angel” are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens or free with Central I.D. Call 641-628-5335 for tickets.

“Camp Angel” is a provocative new piece about religious violence and the War on Terror, portraying a world in which citizens fear each other and the government. The performance asks audience members to imagine a world in which Christian terrorists attack America, where your next-door neighbor could be your biggest enemy. Three men named after biblical figures begin a dark journey into the power of belief in their search for salvation, only to be captured by the government and declared “enemy combatants.”
Iowa playwright Bruner wrote this tragicomedy in response to a shrinking separation between church and state and the precarious balance between national security and civil liberties.

“A play about Christian terrorists is going to be controversial, but I wanted to talk about how people use faith to justify their actions,” Bruner said. “And those actions, as we all know, can be acts of kindness and love or they can be acts of incredible brutality.”

Wilkinson and the “Camp Angel” cast members are excited for the opportunity to work hands-on with the playwright.

“Having a playwright in residence has been an amazing learning experience,” Wilkinson said. “Scenes move and lines are added or cut with almost every rehearsal. Jeffrey has been very responsive to feedback from the cast and has allowed us to feel an enormous sense of ownership in the work.”

Like Bruner, Wilkinson agrees audience members will benefit from a controversial performance.

“The theatrical exploration of difficult subject matter is the very essence of a liberal arts education,” she said. “The piece challenges our perspectives on many political and social issues, and we hope it will give rise to a great deal of conversation.”

The play contains adult subject matter, violence and the use of strobe lights and gunfire. A panel of educators from multiple disciplines will lead a discussion pertaining to topics in the play immediately following performances on Wednesday and Friday.

CSPS Out of Bounds Call for Films

Legion Arts wants to show your films at the "Out of Bounds" open stage events held at CSPS, 1103 Third St SE, Cedar Rapids.

From F. John Herbert, Legion Arts Executive Director: "We schedule an Out of Bounds event every month, and would be happy to see one or more films on each program. Short forms are best, say 5-10 minutes, though something longer can be accommodated if we have advance notice. All genres are welcome; no restrictions on form or content. In particular, Out of Bounds is a great opportunity to put works-in-progress in front of a small, thoughtful, appreciative audience, and get some helpful feedback."

There is no entry fee and box office is split among artists, performers and filmmakers appearing that night. Legion Arts can sell your CDs, books and t-shirts, within reason. Filmmakers interested in showing their work must sign up in advance. To sign up, send an email to mel@legionarts.org or phone Mel Andringa at CSPS, 319-364-1580. For more information about Out of Bounds, visit http://www.legionarts.org/events/Oob10.htm.
