Film Festival FAQs

What constitutes a an Iowa Connection?
If a key member of the crew or cast was born, has lived in or attended school in Iowa for at least one year, there’s no question—you have a close tie to Iowa. Other examples of close ties include:
• A film that was at least partially shot on-location in Iowa
• A film about Iowa
• A film about Iowans, but not necessarily set in the state

The CRI Film Festival Board of Directors has the final say about "distant" close connections. If your caterer once drove through Iowa in a rental car traveling from LA to New York...no. If you wonder if your film is eligible, e-mail eric@crifm.org or call 319-721-7465.

What if I can’t get to the festival, but did not send money to ship my complimentary shirt?
You may send the fee later, and we will send you your shirt. If it is quite a long time after the festival, you may wish to check on availability.

What is meant by the new division, "Pro Am?"
For our entry purposes, a filmmaker who earns less than 60% of their income from production.

From The Pro-Am Revolution, by Charles Leadbeater and Paul Miller, "A Pro-Am pursues an activity as an amateur, mainly for the love of it, but sets a professional standard. Pro-Ams are unlikely to earn more than a small portion of their income from their pastime but they pursue it with the dedication and commitment associated with a professional. For Pro-Ams, leisure is not passive consumerism but active and participatory; it involves the deployment of publicly accredited knowledge and skills, often built up over a long career, which has involved sacrifices and frustrations."

What if I end up coming to the Festival and I've already paid S/H for my shirt?
We’ll be happy to refund your shipping fee.

Will the theatre be showing other films besides the Festival entries? Yes. The festival will be showing on 3 of 5 screens, except Saturday morning, when Festival content will play on all 5. Current studio movies, second runs, and other independents will be shown on the other 2, however these are not included in the festival admission.
